Wichita: cultural center of Kansas

Wichita is in the state of Kansas in the US. It is considered to be the cultural center of Kansas and features numerous art and history museums, a performing arts group, sports teams, shopping centers and more for the holiday goers to enjoy.

Wichita Art Museum

The Wichita Art Museum is the largest of its kind in Kansas and houses 7,000 works in its permanent collections. There are several other museums to see, including the Mid-America All-Indian Center, and the Old Cowtown living history museum, as well as the Exploration Place for science fans.

 

Sedgwick County Zoo

The Sedgwick County Zoo is another popular spot to visit with its 2,500 animals that represent 500 species. You can go to the zoo, and then visit the Sedgwick county park or the Sedgwick County Extension Arboretum, which are all next to each other.

 

Basketball

If you love basketball, head to the Bramlage Coliseum to watch the Kansas State basketball team the Wildcats. They represent Kansas State University and are in the NCAA’s Division I, as well as being part of the Big 12 Conference.

 

Kansas City Ice Center

Try some ice skating at the Kansas City Ice Center where you can pay just a few dollars to rent some skates and either ice skate or roller skate the afternoon away!

 

Outdoor activity

Or go hiking and rock climbing at the Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge, where you may also see wild buffalo, elk or deer or go fishing or camping.

If you love books and art, come in May for the Art Wichita Art and Book Fair, sponsored by the Friends of the Wichita Art Museum.

 

American Indian Festival

One of the most interesting things to do in Wichita is to participate in the American Indian Festival in July where you can learn about Native American Indians. It’s a fantastic festival where you get to celebrities Indian traditions.

Wichita Concert Hall

Century II Performing Arts & Convention Center

While this technically isn't an opera house, is is the largest center for entertainment in Wichita, Kansas and home to the Wichita Grand Opera. It hosts three other major art organizations including the Wichita Symphony Orchestra, the Music Theatre of Wichita and the Music Theatre for Young People. This sprawling multi-venue complex is the perfect place to visit no matter what your entertainment needs include. MARATHON

Prairie Fire Marathon

The Prairie Fire Marathon held in Wichita is a marathon series with a half-marathon in the spring and a full marathon in October. The course will take you through the beautiful city of Wichita, including the scenic park areas around Museum Boulevard, where there will be music entertainment to motivate you on your journey. The race is flat and fast, which makes it a great opportunity to qualify for the Boston Marathon if you are an experienced runner!

GOLF

Golf in Wichita

There are over 20 courses in Wichita, the most centrally located being Arthur B. Sim Park Golf Course. It is an 18 hole course that features winding fairways as it follows the Arkansas River, while the city of Wichita is ever present as a backdrop. Close by you will find MacDonald Golf Course, one of the most popular public courses in Wichita and the short but sweet L.W Clapp Memorial Golf Course. There's a lot of golf to experience in Wichita, but make sure to call in advance to secure your tee time!
