Geneve, or as it is also spelled, Geneva, Switzerland is the capital of the Republic and Canton of Geneva. The Geneva Convention was signed here, which spells out treatment of prisoners of war and non-combatants during a war situation. It is home to the global headquarters of the United Nations and the Red Cross.
There is live music at the Au Chat Noir and an alternative arts venue, the L’Usine, with unsigned bands. See famous groups at the SEG Geneva Arena. If you prefer ballet, then the Ballet du Grand Theatre season runs from Sept to June. The Grand Theatre also hosts opera. Make sure to visit the huge water sculpture that is Jet d’Eau where the Rhone meets Lake Geneva.
For Geneva nightlife events, some of the local bars include Arthur’s Rive Gauche, FloorTWO Bar at Grand Hotel Kempinkski, La Clémence in Old Town. Clubs include the Gold & Platinum, and Macumba, which is a wine bar, disco, pub, and four restaurants all wrapped in one. For dancing into the wee hours head to Weetamix.
Shopping is one of the best things to do in Geneva. You’ll find hundreds of shopping opportunities from specialty shops with beautiful jewels, antiques, and artwork to more mainstream retailers.
Geneva features a temperate and oceanic style of climate, which means it has mild winters and warm summers, and some ice and snow in the wintertime. Holiday goers usually come in the summer to enjoy swimming at the Geneva Plage and other public beaches. In the winter, snow covers the Area Mountains and skiers come to go to the Verbier or Crans Montana ski resort, about two hours driving time from Geneva.
