Located one the shoreline of Bottenviken, Piteå offer a fantastic archipelago with over 500 islands of nice swimming spots, pristine beaches and exciting wildlife. During the summer months, there are boats connecting the islands to the mainland and you can also go on guided tours. A nice tip however, is to book a taxi boat that will take you out to some of the more secluded islands where you can enjoy the surroundings, if you are lucky, all by yourself.
A visit to Piteå is not completed until you have had a taste of, what the locals call their “national dish” – Pitepalt. The dish consists of potatoes and barley flour that is squeezed together and made into round balls. These are then filled with pork meat (mostly common) and are then boiled. If you really want to maximize your palt- experience, head on over to the small village of Öjeby, just outside of Piteå where you will find the world’s first “Paltzeria” and where you can find all kinds of variations of the northern dish.
