Girona is an ancient little town located in Catalonia, Spain. While a lot of tourists prefer its more popular neighbor, Barcelona, there are still a number of visitors who choose to explore Girona because it has a more peaceful atmosphere and less crowded tourist attractions. There are some really nice places to see and things to do in Girona, but time here are best spent strolling around the interesting city, just taking in the calm and beauty of it.


Things to do in Girona

When you land at the Girona – Costa Brava Airport, you can either take a bus to Barcelona or ride towards the city center of Girona. Both places have their own beauty and charm, and you can visit both places when you spend your holiday in Spain. During the day, you can play a round of golf or visit ancient castles. At night, several cafes, bars, and clubs go into full swing to accommodate any tired tourist looking for a place to relax.


Old Town of Girona

Touring the narrow streets and alleyways of the Old Town can be done on foot. The stroll can be a bit tiresome because there are steep flights of stairs along the historic district. However, you will be rewarded with magnificent views of old fortifications, medieval structures, and ancient churches.


New Town of Girona

When you explore the New Town, you can either walk or go cycling along the wider roads and avenues. A lot of restaurants, cafes, and hotels can be found in the New Town, also called the city center, so you may want to choose an accommodation that is located here.


When to go to Girona

Girona experiences a temperate humid subtropical climate, featuring hot, humid summers and cool, sometimes frosty winters. Summer temperatures can soar to 30-40 °C (86-104 °F) while winter temperatures can go as low as −5 °C (23 °F). Rain falls evenly throughout the year but is significantly more common in the months of May and October.

The ”safest” time to visit Girona to avoid rain is from June to August because there are lower chances of rain and more hours to enjoy the sunshine each day.

Maratón Vías Verdes

Maratón Vías Verdes, or the Greenways Marathon, is an annual marathon event in February in the small Catalonian town of Girona. The event features many different distances: a main marathon, a 30k, a half-marathon and a 10k, so no matter if you are an elite athlete or a casual runner, you will be able to participate. Golf in Girona

There are a couple of really nice courses in Girona. Golf Girona is the most centrally located, taking place 180 meters above sea level. This makes for a challenging course, as the terrain is very hilly, with elevation changes everywhere. It also makes for a fantastic nature experience where you can feel truly immersed in the Spanish countryside.
