Siena, a city in Italy, is well known for its gorgeous medieval architecture, delicious treats, and the famous Palio di Siena. Palio di Siena

If you visit Siena during July or August, you will be able to see the most popular event in the city, the Palio di Siena. This horse race is a historical event dating back to the 11th century. Local Italians are fiercely loyal to their team. The race takes place at the Piazza del Campo in the city center which is an architectural wonder itself.


Siena Basketball, Baseball & Lacrosse

Other sports such as basketball, baseball, and lacrosse have long had popularity in Siena. The city has excellent professional leagues and visitors to Siena will love to see the national competitions.


Duomo Cathedral

Another great place to visit is the Duomo, a beautiful Roman cathedral with an adjunct art museum where you will learn more about the history of the city.

As you walk through the streets of Siena, don’t forget to try the Sienese specialty desserts, such as small almond cakes, which are totally scrumptious.


How to get to Siena

Even though there is an airport close to Siena, there are at no scheduled flights to this airport. Most visitors therefore travel to Florence or Pisa and continue to Siena by train, bus or cab.


When to go to Siena

Siena is a sunny and warm city, with high summer temperatures. Summer is the most popular time to visit Siena, especially due to the Palio. So make sure to help yourself to plenty of water and fresh juice while out in the cobbled streets. Another great thing about summer visits is the Siena Jazz Festival or the International Siena Jazz Masterclasses. This is a great opportunity to hear truly excellent music which features at least 30 concerts, held during this two-week festival.

UNESCO World Heritage Sites Siena - Val d’Orcia

Siena ski vacations - Slide down a dormant volcano

You don’t have to visit the Alps in northern Italy to find good places for skiing. Only an hour drive away from Siena you will find the ski resort Mount Amiata. It is a dormant volcano located between the provinces of Siena and Grosseto, which offer you 12 downhill pistes and 4 Nordic- ski tracks. It is said to be the most important ski resort in Lower Tuscany and Upper Latium. Depending on the weather conditions the season most often open in mid December and ends around Easter.

Golf in Siena

Just south of Siena you will find the beautiful 18 hole Royal Golf La Bagnaia Course. The Tuscan landscape that surrounds the Italian city is a typical example of inland links, which many courses in Scotland are famous for.
