UNESCO World Heritage Sites San Salvador - Joya de Cerén Archaeological Site

Joya de Cerén in El Salvador was a farming community that, around the year 600 AD, suffered a similar fate to that of the city of Pompeii and was buried under ash coming from the Laguna Caldera volcano. What makes Joya de Cerén fascinating is precisely a consequence of the eruption of the volcano; the site has been extraordinarily well-preserved thanks to the layers of ash covering it, making it the greatest example of pre-Hispanic village in Mesoamerica. For this reason, the site has made it onto the World Heritage List by UNESCO.
