One of the most beautiful islands in the Atlantic, Santa Maria, is situated in the Azores and offers pristine white-sand beaches, comfortable weather, rich history and plenty of activities and events. It is the perfect holiday getaway for tourists who love the sun, sand, and sea.
Although Santa Maria seems small on the map, it greets you with stunning white-sand beaches and incredible views of the ocean. The Praia Formosa bay offers a beautiful beach that is arguably the most popular on the island. Another beautiful beach is the Sao Lourenco Vila do Porto which is located on the north side of the island. The town of Anjos is also worth a visit if you are staying in the northern part of Santa Maria.
A trip to the south side of the island reveals the beautiful town of Almagreira located right along the shore. This amazing town offers a quaint and quiet side of Santa Maria that is nestled next to the ocean.
Spending your time outdoors will truly reward you with extraordinary experiences, from beach activities to island tours to simply relaxing at an open-air café along the shore.
Weather-wise, Santa Maria is best visited during the dry season, when the sun is a constant companion during the day. The island’s tropical climate brings in plenty of rain and thunderstorms during the wet season, but you can keep the island to yourself if you visit during this time.
There are several annual celebrations and festivities on the island, such as the Our Lady of the Assumption Celebration in mid-August, the music festival at Praia Formosa in the last week of August, and the Festival of Divino Espirito Santo on the seventh Sunday following Pentecost. These are some of the best times to experience the rich culture and heritage of the island in its full glory and there’s also a lot of fun things to do in Santa Maria during these festivities.
