The Beautiful Island of Öland, sometimes called the island of sun and wind, will make for a fantastic destination while in Sweden on vacation. Connected to the seaside town of Kalmar by a bridge, this island with a beautiful scenic nature and creative atmosphere is easy to access by car. Enjoy the island’s fantastic sandy beaches, lose yourself in the beauty of the overwhelming and exciting landscape of Alvaret in the south, admire the beautiful shapes of the Raukar, sea-stacks, in the north and just enjoy everything in between.
Öland offers fantastic opportunities for beautiful outdoor experiences as it has over 75 nature reserves. The most recognized of these is the great reserve of Alvaret, located in the south part of the island. This scenic reserve is 15 kilometers wide, makes up almost a quarter of the entire area of the island and contains a lot of special and rare flora that is unique to this area. In other words, haven to all of you nature lovers!
Bird Watching
Öland also has a rich bird life and if birds are an interest of yours, you should definitely make time for a visit to Ottenby, located on the south part on the island. Here you will find a bird station where you can either watch the birds on your own, or join guided tours where you can even get the chants to mark them yourself.
Hiking and Biking
All around the island you will find nice hiking and biking trails that will take you through the beautiful landscape.
If you are traveling with children the Zoo and amusement park are definitely a must. See animals from all over the world, enjoy yourself in the amusement park or cool down in the water park that contains many fun and wet attractions.
Every year on the 14th of July, you can be sure the island will be crowded. This is namely the birthday of the Swedish Crown Princess Victoria and every year her birthday is celebrated in the town of Borgholm. People from all over come to participate in the festivities and to maybe get a glimpse of the birthday girl herself and the rest of the royal family.
One of the absolute highlights of the island is the annual harvest festival that is held all over the island in the end of September every year. Make your way around the island and stop at farms and small villages. Buy local goods from the harvests, visit small yard sales, watch the fine arts and crafts the island is known for, drink homemade apple cider, heated over an open fire, and enjoy the cozy atmosphere. When night falls, the roads are lit up with candles, fires and cressets, making the island seem almost magical. Definitely worth a visit! Owegoo highly recommend a visit to the small village of Eriksöre, located on the south part of the island.
