UNESCO World Heritage Sites Merida - Pre-Hispanic Town of Uxmal

The town of Uxmal represents the highest point of late Mayan art and architecture, with its main sites built between the 8th and 10th centuries AD, when it was abandoned until the arrival of the Spanish. An interesting fact about Uxmal is that, unlike most prehispanic towns, it isn’t laid out geometrically but in relation to certain astronomical phenomena such as the position of Venus when it rises. The upper level of the facades of the buildings is decorated with rich symbolic motifs and usually represents the divinity Chaac, god of the rain.
