Kuching is believed to be derived from the Malay word kucing, which means cat. Since the locals refer to Kuching as the Cat City, thus it is natural for the Kuching Cat Museum to be located here. Cat lovers will surely find a lot of lovable cat memorabilia in the Kuching Cat Museum, plus a variety of feline art, cat exhibits, and cat stuffed toys.


Kuching Shopping Mall

There are also several shopping centers in Kuching where you can buy clothes and souvenirs. Plaza Merdeka is a multi-storey Kuching shopping mall in the city center. The ever popular Damai Beach is a must see while in Kuching, this Kuching beach is picture perfect. If you’re looking for a less crowded beach its the Kuching beach Santubong beach you should visit. It is located just 30 kilometers away from Kuching, and its the perfect escape.


When to go to Kuching

Kuching features a tropical rainforest climate, so expect plenty of rain no matter which time of the year your visit. The dry season of June through August experiences relatively lower amounts of precipitation but the heat and humidity rise during these months. October through March is the city’s monsoon season. The transitional periods of April to May and September to early October are the best time to visit the city because of relatively lower humidity and lower chances of rainfall.

Kuching Marathon

The Kuching Marathon is an annual Marathon held in one of the biggest cities in Malaysia in the month of August. The race starts in the heart of Kuching, at the Padang Merdeka. Like if you had stepped into a time machine, the race will take you to the Malay Village, a village older than Kuching and with a lot of historical sights, many preserved through the ages. After seeing most what the Kuching countryside has to offer, you will start heading back to where you came from and finally reach the finish line at Padang Merdeka.
