UNESCO-WORLD-HERITAGE-SITE

UNESCO World Heritage Sites Lyon - Historic Site of Lyons

From the Romans until today, Lyons has witnessed over two millennia of continuous urban settlement with a role of commercial and strategic significance. Consequently, the city also pictures the evolution of architecture and town planning over many periods of history, making it a UNESCO World Heritage Site on 1998. On Fourvière, one of the two hills dominating the site of Lyons, lie the remains of the Roman settlement that first occupied the present city. The theatre remains are very impressive and well-preserved ones that you can visit on a hike or by taking the funicular. Lyon has, in addition, buildings from all the succeeding centuries: the Manécanterie, a choir school from the 11th century, the Thomassin House form the 13th century or the Hôtel-Dieu from the 17th-18th century to mention some.

OPERA

Lyon Opera House

Opéra Nouvel

The Opera House in Lyon has a history dating back to 1756 when it was first created as an extension of an existing building in Lyon. The biggest problem was the size of the opera house, which led to a new building being created about 70 years later. The new building served the French opera enthusiasts well for more than a century, but in the 1980's, it was decided that a modernization of the opera house was in order. Built on top of the old building, the French architects added a horseshoe-like glass suited roof and several improvements both for the performing artists but also for the audience. The new Opéra Nouvel is the result of when the old and the new can merge into something truly great.
