Lisbon is the capital and biggest city in Portugal with more than 547,000 people. Alfama is the oldest district in Lisbon. Walking the narrow streets of this charming neighborhood where the Fado music penetrates the city buzz is one of the best things to do in Lisbon and makes for a fantastic cultural experience.
With mild, pleasant temperatures, tourists tend to come to Lisbon all year long, with the periods of March to May and September to October being popular due to lower hotel rates, less crowds and warmer waters for swimming. Come at the end of the winter season if you want to experience the Lisbon Carnival which features parades, parties and masked revelers. The Carnival happens in the beginning of February.
If you like running events, be sure to come in the beginning of October to witness or run in the Lisbon Marathon which is, actually, a half marathon. The route starts in Cascais and continues beside the Atlantic ocean, through the famous Oerias gardens and then back towards the Tagus River.
