Maseru is the capital city of Lesotho and is situated directly on the border of Lesotho and South Africa. It is a small city with a panoramic view and although the tourist attractions here are few, it is a wonderful starting point if you want to explore the rest of Lesotho.
Maseru is the perfect base if you’re traveling deeper into the country of Lesotho. Upon entry to Maseru, you will not miss seeing the Basotho Hat, an iconic building in the city where you can find a gift and craft shop inside.
There are a lot of shops, stores, and supermarkets in the city where backpackers can stock up on food and other supplies. Supermarket like Pick’n’Pay or OK Shoprite are great places to meet other backpackers.
If you’re planning to spend a day or two in Maseru, you can visit the Maseru Golf Club, Lehakoe Club and Gym, and Lesotho National Tennis Courts for some sports and recreational activities before you continue on your journey. The Maseru Golf course is the only one in the country of Lesotho.
Maseru experiences a subtropical highland climate where summers are warm and rainy while winters are dry and chilly. In the summer months of December to March, the main temperature is 22°C (72°F). June to September is the winter season, with an average temperature of 9°C (48°F). During the months of April to May, some of the most popular things to do in Maseru include outdoor activities like trekking, canoeing, and hiking. This is the period when the weather is not rainy and the temperature does not drop too low.
In early March, there is a colorful festival called Moeshoeshoe Day that is celebrated in the city. You can witness parades and processions if you visit Maseru during this month.
