Vientiane – Meet the Great Buddha

Vientiane, the capital of Laos, is a small city but packed with historic, religious, and modern attractions that wow the tourists. The city is also overflowing with Buddha statues, relics, and images from different ages and places. Shopping centers and nightlife venues in Vientiane are also pretty impressive.

Vientiane Buddha Park

If you are coming from Thailand and passing along the Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge, you can take your first stop at the Vientiane Buddha Park just outside the city. This Buddha park is situated at the end of the Mekong River and features sprawling gardens containing a huge collection of Hindu and Buddhist sculptures. The Vientiane Buddha Park is a beautiful must-see.

 

Vientiane Shopping

Sometimes you simply don’t want to be cultural. Then you’ll be happy to know that shopping is one of many great things to do in Vientiane when you need a break from the temples and Buddhas. The shopping opportunities are superb and there are a lot of different malls, department stores, and handicraft shops that are worth your while. Also the Vientiane shopping won’t ruin you, prices are often quite reasonable, especially if you are good at haggling.

 

 

 

 

Vientiane Nightlife

There’s really no shortage of the Vientiane nightlife venues. There are several bars and clubs throughout the city and along the Mekong shoreline. Don’t forget to try the Beerlao, the national beer of Laos. Vientiane nightlife is a great addition to your holiday.

 

Vientiane to Hanoi and Vientiane to Bangkok

If you want to visit the neighboring countries, you can actually go from Vientiane to Hanoi, Vietnam and from Vientiane to Bangkok, Thailand. Vientiane to Hanoi by bus takes about 20-24 hours while Vientiane to Bangkok by train takes 11-12 hours. You can always choose to travel by plane but it will be more expensive.

 

When to go to Vientiane

 

The tropical wet and dry climate of Vientiane is characterized by a dry season running from November through March and a wet season spanning the months of April through October. The hottest month in the city is April, with an average high of 34.3°C (93.7°F), while the coolest month is January, with an average low of 16.4°C (61.5°F). Vientiane’s weather is hot and humid no matter the season.

If you want to witness the most important festival that is held at the most important landmark of Vientiane and the entire Laos, you can visit the city in November, in time for the Bun That Luang festival.

GOLF

Golf in Vientiane

Golf is a relatively new pastime activity in Vientiane. The picturesque Lao Country Club was the first golf club to be established here, and is giving golfers scenic sights among rolling hills and reflecting water-hazards every day since. There is one more course near Vientiane, and that is the 27 hole SEA Games Golf Club. It was built in 2009 to be used in the SEA games in the small Pokham Village close to Laos, making it a great day trip when you are in Vientiane.
