Kiev: capital of Ukraine

Kiev, also sometimes spelled Kyiv, is the capital and the largest city of Ukraine. It is located in the north central part of the country on the Dnieper River. It is an exciting as well as a beautiful city with much to offer its visitors and whether you are a history buff or a culture lover you’ll find a lot of things to do in Kiev, to fit your interests.

Kyiv Zoo

If you are on holiday and love animals, then go to the Kyiv Zoo, which is a hundred years old and has more than 2,600 animals representing more than 328 species. 


Ballet and Opera

If you prefer music, take in the Kyiv Ballet, a leading ballet group stationed here. They perform classical ballet and tour worldwide, with more than 24 ballets in their repertory. Another musical venue is the Kyiv Opera, established in 1867. They perform at the National Opera House of Ukraine.


Kiev Fortress

History buffs will enjoy the Kiev Fortress, which is the name of the fortification buildings built in the 19th century as Russian fortresses. Some are now used by military or commercial companies, and some were turned into museums.


When to go to Kiev

Kiev features a humid continental climate with the hottest period being between June to August. In that timeframe the average temperatures range from 13.8 to 24.8 °C (56.8 to 76.6 °F). The coolest months are from December to February with average temperatures ranging −4.6 to −1.1 °C (23.7 to 30.0 °F).


Kiev Events

Some of the events during the year are Kyiv Independence Day on August 24th, with fireworks, celebrations, parties and festivities. Fashion Week is held in both March and October where many fashion designers come there to show off their clothing and celebrities and clients from all over the world come to see the newest fashions. It is billed as being as successful as the shows in Paris, London or New York.

Music lovers should come for the Jazz festival in October, which lasts for three days and features many renowned jazz artists.

Kiev Opera House

National Opera of Ukraine

Located near the university area this early 20th century opera house was designed by Victor Schröter and is the main venue for performance arts in Kiev. The opera house is made in Neo-Renaissance style with an interior influenced by classical style with a modern twist. The National Opera of Ukraine is most known for its huge stage which is one of the biggest and most advanced in Europe. Be sure to not miss this creative masterpiece of a building when you are in Kiev!

UNESCO World Heritage Sites Kiev - Saint-Sophia Cathedral and Related Monastic Buildings, Kiev-Pechersk Lavra

The Saint-Sophia cathedral of Kiev and the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, an ensemble of monastic buildings, are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site together. The cathedral, situated in the historic centre of the city, is an emblem of 11th-century monumental art and architecture. Its outside is characterized by the bright green, white and golden colours and the interior has been very well preserved, especially its beautiful mosaics and frescoes.

Kyiv Marathon

The Kyiv Marathon starts at the Independence Monument and will take you through the inner city of Kyiv and along the Dnieper River, with a great view of the Hidropark Island. The race features a full marathon, a 10k, a 5k and a team relay run so there is something for you no matter if you are an elite athlete or a casual runner. The race is an annual marathon event held in the month of September and is a great way to say your last farewell to the summer in Ukraine. Make your way to their website to register!

Kiev ski vacations - Paradise for beginners

All beginner ski lovers look over here! Almost in the heart of Kiev you have nice potential for skiing. Here you have a full- featured ski slope with two runs. The first one (located to the left) works very well for most beginners since it is a bit lower and more flat. The other one (located to the right) is a bit higher with more steep. You easily enter the ski area by using the metro.
