Shopping is best done in Arbat, a tree-lined pedestrianized street that is home to several shops and a couple of Almaty shopping malls. Here you can find the Silk Way Mall and TsUM which both houses Western-style stores and brands. The best way to go shopping is definitely in a Almaty mall.


Almaty nightlife

There isn’t much Almaty nightlife, but the few options you have are decent and fun enough to entertain you through the night. Instead of a jumping nightlife there are several local beers and wines that you should try if you are looking for something new to drink.


When to go to Almaty

The humid continental climate of Almaty features rather extreme temperatures: freezing cold winters from October to April and hot summers for the remainder of the year. Temperatures vary from an average low of -8.4 °C (16.9 °F) in January to an average high of 30 °C (86 °F) in July.


If you want to go skiing, the best time to do it is from April to May when the worst of the winter has passed and fresh snow still lingers on the mountain slopes.

Almaty ski vacations - Lots of sunny days and mild climate

Near the largest city of Kazakhstan, Almaty, you have the ski resort Shymbulak, sometimes called Chimbulak. It is located in the Zaiilisky Alatau mountain range, about 16 miles (25 km) south of Almaty. The area offers you three lifts and a highest point at 10 500 ft (3 200m). Through the winter Shymbulak provides a terrific amount of snow and lots of sunny days, along with that comes a mild climate, which makes it a popular resort. Couldn’t be better, right?

Almaty Opera House

Abay Opera House

Named after the Kazakh poet, composer and philosopher Abay Qunanbayuli, the Abay Opera House was inaugurated in 1934. It is located near the Almaly metro station in central Almaty. Musically, the opera house is known for the opera 'Abay' by Akhmed Zhubanov and Latif Khamidi. Apart from that the Kazakh opera company residing there performs ballets and classical music. Almaty Marathon

Starting at the Park of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, The Almaty Marathon runs through the city through the Al-Farabi Avenue, past Salna Street and finishes in the Central Stadium. The entrance fee is at 1500 Kazakhstani Tenge, which is worth approximately 6 US Dollars, but you can also pay more if you want to since the Almaty Marathon is connected to charities in the city. Put on your shoes and experience the city while running!
