Sapporo – a fantastic getaway for all seasons

Whether you’re planning to visit Sapporo in summer or winter, there are so many things to do in Sapporo. In summer, you can go for an excellent sightseeing tour along the tree-lined boulevards of the city, and the winter season brings a range of snow-related activities like skiing and snowboarding. There is also a huge selection of festivals to attend and landmarks to visit in Sapporo.

 

Things to do in Sapporo

Sapporo is the capital of Hokkaido prefecture in Hokkaido Island, Japan.
There is a big variety of things to do in Sapporo, for example there are a host of parks, towers, and museums throughout the city, so make sure to get a tourist map so that you can plan out your sightseeing itinerary.

 

Sapporo Clock Tower

The Clock Tower is one of the most iconic symbols of Sapporo. Almost all the Japanese tourists who travels to Sapporo feels the need to visit this landmark. The Clock Tower is therefor one of the most visited tourist attractions in the city.

 

Sapporo Beer Museum and Beer Garden

Another interesting holiday destination is the Sapporo Beer Museum which houses extensive displays and exhibits about the history of beer in Japan. The Beer museum also offers guided tours about the beer brewing process, plus you can have a taste of the different kinds of beers at the Beer Garden adjacent to the museum. The Beer Garden is the perfect place to soak in everything you just learned at the Beer Museum.

 

Sapporo Ice Festival

Because of the heavy snowfall received by Sapporo every winter, the city holds an annual Ice Festival in the first week of February. The Ice Festival is one of Sapporo’s biggest events, featuring an ice sculpture competition attended by different artists from around the globe.

 

Sapporo to Niseko

Sapporo is also a famous skiing destination because of the several ski resorts and mountain lodges in and around the city. If you want to experience world-class powder skiing and snowboarding, go from Sapporo to Niseko which is just two hours away by bus.

 

When to go to Sapporo

In Sapporo, the summer season runs from June through September and has an average daily temperature of 16.7 to 22.3 °C (62.1 to 72.1 °F). The winter season covers the months of November through March, with average daily temperatures ranging from -3.6 to 4.9 °C (25.5 to 40.8 °F).

Sapporo ski vacations - Great for daily ski trips

Sapporo offers several good places for skiing, all of them easily accessible by daily trips. One thing is for sure, they are all provided with a lot of snow! Sapporo Teine is located 45 minutes away and is a very good resort for beginners and kids. Sapporo Kokusai, one hour away, brags about their 18 metres (59 feet) of powder per season. Kioro is a modern resort located about 70 minutes away. If you want to try some backcountry areas and deserted off-piste you should try Asari ski resort. Another modern ski resort, Tomamu, also offers good off-piste!

CHOCOLATE-MUSEUM

Shiroi Koibito Park, Sapporo

Shiroi Koibito Park is a a theme park by Ishiya, a local chocolate company. The company's flagship product is the Shiroi Koibito cookie, which consists of two thin butter cookies and a layer of white chocolate in between. The park consists of a free area with a shop, cafe and restaurant and an area with various chocolate related exhibits a "Cookiecraft studio" and, which is probably the most interesting attraction, a few large windows through which visitors can observe the cookie production process in the factory. Another part of the Shiroi Koibito Park is a soccer field that serves as the practice ground for Consadole Sapporo, the local J-League soccer team. Find out more about Sapporo here.
