Okinawa Island – great beaches and amazing sea life

Okinawa island is the largest island in the Japanese prefecture of the same name. It is perhaps the most visited of all the islands in the Okinawa prefecture because there are plenty of tourist destinations that can be found here. It is also where the prefecture’s capital, Naha, is located. Beach combing and island hopping are very popular activities in Okinawa.

Okinawa is a famous holiday destination not only for foreign visitors but mostly for the Japanese living in the mainland. With great sea life and beaches it is a spotless holiday with plenty of things to do in Okinawa for you to enjoy when you visit!

 

Okinawa beaches

The beaches are a big draw for tourists because of the fine sand, clear waters, and good weather. Emerald Beach, Zanpa Beach, and Ikei Beach are just some of the most visited beaches in Okinawa. Other than sunbathing and swimming there are other activities such as beach combing on the beaches of Okinawa.

 

Diving in Okinawa

If you’re impressed with the island’s seascape, wait until you get a chance to explore the underwater scene of Okinawa. Diving is a wonderful activity on the island and there are plenty of diving spots to choose from.

 

Okinawa Aquarium

Just a short walk from Emerald Beach is the Churaumi Aquarium. In the Aquarium you can find the biggest living coral exhibit in the world, plus a colorful range of fishes, rays, and sharks.

 

Okinawa Zoo

For many families another attraction on the island is the Okinawa Zoo. The zoo features 194 species of mammals, birds, amphibians, and reptiles.

 

Okinawa nightlife

There are various nightlife hubs on the island and you can find a cluster of bars and clubs in every city you visit. But the most notable is Naha’s Kokusaidori Street because it is the largest nightlife spot on the island.

 

When to go to Okinawa

Okinawa has a borderline tropical and subtropical climate with a short rainy season in late spring up to early summer and a short typhoon season in the months of September to early October. The rest of the year is fairly mild and temperate, supporting the myriad of outdoor activities and holiday events in the island.

The winter season is the best time to go sightseeing as the daytime temperature neither gets too cold or too hot. Summer is the peak travel season and also the best time to go beach-hopping.

MARATHON

Okinawa Marathon

In Okinawa you can choose between running a full marathon or just a quarter marathon at 10 km (about 6.2 miles). While running the Okinawa Marathon you pass through different cities, towns and villages that are located in central Okinawa. The Okinawa Marathon has been a great tradition for over 20 years , so if you are in town in February, make sure to not miss it!
