Hiroshima is a city in Japan that is best known as the victim of the first atomic bomb attack in world history. But far from its horrible condition as ground zero during World War II, Hiroshima is now a bustling, cosmopolitan city that attracts tourists from all over the world.

When visiting the city there are a lot of things to do in Hiroshima besides looking into its horrible history. Visiting Hiroshima Castle is one amazing sight to be seen.


Hiroshima Peace Memorial and museum

Many people visit Hiroshima for the sole purpose of exploring the city’s part in World War II. As such, one of the most popular holiday destinations in the city is the Peace Memorial which contains most of the monuments, landmarks, and memorials related to the atomic bomb attack. The Peace Memorial is a must see when visiting Hiroshima.


Hiroshima Peace Park

Peace Park is dotted with more than fifty statues, memorials, and other historic structures. You can easily see the skeletal remains of the A-Bomb Dome, as well as the Children’s Peace Monument and the Memorial Tower to the Mobilized Students. You can also visit the Peace Memorial Museum which houses exhibits, displays, and artifacts related to the bombing.


Hiroshima Castle

Outside Peace Park, there are various tourist spots to check out. Head to Chuo Park to see the Hiroshima Castle or to Hijiyama Park to visit the Hiroshima City Manga Library.The Hiroshima Castle is a typical Japanese castle in all its historic glory.


Hiroshima to Miyajima

If you want a trip outside the city, you can take a ferry from Hiroshima to Miyajima Island where you can visit shrines and go on food trips to your heart’s content. To go from Hiroshima to Miyajima is a perfect day trip.


When to go to Hiroshima

The summer season in Hiroshima coincides with the rainy season, so expect the months of June to August to be hot, humid, and rainy. Average highs in the summer season can soar above 32°C (90 °F). September is the city’s typhoon month. October through May are considered the most ideal time to visit the city, as the winter season is mild enough for sightseeing tours and the spring season is the perfect time to see cherry blossoms.

UNESCO World Heritage Sites Hiroshima - Hiroshima Peace Memorial (Genbaku Dome)

After the explosion of the first atomic bomb on 6 August 1945 in Hiroshima, only one structure was left standing. This structure was preserved and has become the Hiroshima Peace Memorial, a symbol to remind everyone of what happened but also to express hope. Since 1996, it has been listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
