Things to do in Turin

The city of Turin, now the capital of Piedmont in Italy, was once the seat of the Italian royal family. The city’s sophisticated, aristocratic air can still be felt in its old landmarks and buildings.

 

Turin Cathedral

One highly-rated attraction in the city is the Turin Cathedral. Beside the Cathedral is the Church of the Holy Shroud, another famous religious attraction in the city.

 

Turin Museums

Turin also features many notable museums that draw crowds of tourists each year. There is the Egyptian Museum of Turin which houses one of the biggest collections of Egyptian antiquities in the world. Also, you can go to the Puppet Museum, Museum of Oriental Art, and National Museum of the Mountains.

 

Motors & Cars

Motors, cars, automotive, and aerospace are also big words in the city of Turin. The main economy of the city lies in automobile manufacturing and several of the leading automotive companies such as General Motors, Fiat, Maserati, and Alfa Romeo operate in Turin.

 

Juventus Stadium

If you’re into sports, you can drop by the Juventus Stadium when there’s a football game being held in the city. This stadium is home to the highly-lauded Juventus Football Club.

 

When to go to Turin

Turin experiences a humid subtropical climate characterized by dry, cool winters and hot, humid summers. Spring and autumn are typically rainy.

Summer and winter seasons are wonderful times to visit Turin. Summer can be a very busy time in the city because it is the high travel season. On the other hand, you can mostly keep the city to yourself if you spend your Christmas holidays in Turin.

 

Turin Marathon

In November, you can watch or join the Turin Marathon. The annual Turin Marathon, also known as Maratona di Torino Gran Premio La Stampa, was held the first time in 1987. If you want to join the Turin Marathon make sure to register in advance.

Teatro Regio

The Teatro Regio is located on Piazza Castello 215 near the beautiful Giardini Reali park. In the same area you can find the Royal Palace of Turin, the Palazzo Madama and the Museo Diocesano Di Torino. The Teatro Regio has been around for a long time, being founded in the early 18th century, but while the exterior remain true to this time, the interior features an amazing contemporary design being redone in 1973. In the calendar of the opera house you can find both contemporary works as well as classic 19th century operas.

UNESCO World Heritage Sites Turin - Residences of the Royal House of Savoy

In 1562, the Duke of Savoy Emmanuel-Philibert moved his capital to Turin and, to show the power of the ruling house, he ordered the construction of this complex of buildings. During the two coming centuries, the successors continued the building project and finished the Baroque-style residences. The residences of the Royal House of Savoy are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as a great example of European monumental architecture.

MARATHON

Turin Marathon

In November every year, Turin in Italy hosts the Turin Marathon, which is divided into two sections, a competitive race and a non-competitive fun run that is open to everybody. The course both starts and finishes in the center of Turin at Piazza Castello, and in between you run through surrounding villages. Apart from these two races there is also a 6k fun run and walk in the city and a 1k race for the children organized. Something for every member of your family!

SKIING

Turin ski vacations - Paradise for intermediates

Not a beginner, still no pro? Within an hour drive from Turin you find Sauze D’Oulx and Bardonecchia. Sauze D’Oulx is the ultimate place for intermediates since it has over 249 miles (400 km) of runs for them to choose from. All visitors are also provided with a spectacular view over the rising mountains, due to the location up on a mountain shelf. If you are interested in the Milky Way terrain you get access to it through here. Bardonecchia is also a very good place for intermediates to go. Here you can choose from about 87 miles (140 km) of slopes to slide down from. Most of them have great views and are widely spread. If you don’t mind going a little further there are more places worth a visit about 90 minutes away. For example Sestriere, Cervinia, Cormayeur and Gressoney.

iL Neko Café - Cat Cafe Turin

In April 2014, Italy's first cat cafe was opened in Turin - iL Neko Café. At the café, that is actually more of a bistro, both the cats, as well as the costumers, are spoiled rotten by the fabulous and loving staff.

Golf in Turin

There are a couple of great options for golfers who go to Turin. At Royal Park Golf & Country Club you can play on two 18 hole courses, both located in a nature reserve where you can see wild animals as you traverse the beautiful landscape. A little bit north of the city you will find Circolo Golf Torino - La Mandria, also a 36 hole club with two 18 hole courses, both located in the old park of La Mandria. If you there, be prepared for a challenge as it is often considered to be one of the hardest courses near Turin. Another great option is the 18 hole course of Golf Club Le Fronde where you will get a scenic golfing experience surrounded by mountains.
