OPERA

Catania Opera House

Teatro Massimo Bellini

Located on the south-eastern side on the island of Sicily, the Teatro Massimo Bellini, honoring the late local composer Vincenzo Bellini, is the cultural pride of Catania. The history of the opera house ranges back to the devastating earthquake of 1693, where Catania was left completely ruined. In the town meetings that followed, plans were made to restore Catania including building a grand theater which could match the desires of the Catanian people to restore and expand the city. Finally in 1890, the opera house that we can visit today was inaugurated, in all its Sicilian Baroque glory. Make sure to not miss it when you are visiting the beautiful island of Sicily!

SKIING

Catania ski vacations - Ski down Europe's largest active volcano

About an hour drive away from Catania you have Europe’s largest active volcano, Mount Etna, where you find two ski resorts, Piano Provenzana and Nicolosi which both provide good opportunities for alpine and downhill slopes. Thanks to the settled lava from the volcano, all the trails tend to be very smooth. And since the mountain has an altitude of more than 10 000 ft (3 048 m) it is provided with snow from the end of November and until April. December, January and February though are said to be the best months for good snow conditions.
