Istanbul – The transcontinental city

Although Ankara is the capital city of Turkey, Istanbul is regarded the economical and cultural center of the country. Istanbul is located in the Marmara Region in northwestern Turkey and the city sits right on the border to Asia. The city features a so called micro-climate due to its large land area and depending on where you are in the transcontinental city, you may experience different climates. Kids and adults alike will be awed by the Istanbul Aquarium which features 16 different themes and its own rainforest with species from the areas of the Black Sea to the Pacific Ocean.

 

When to go to Istanbul

If you want to enjoy nice weather and also avoid the big masses of tourists you should plan you trip to Istanbul between September and November. The peak season is in the summer, so be prepared that the prices increase during this period. If you visit Istanbul in December or January, you may get away with bargain prices, but you might also want to consider packing an umbrella since this tends to be a very rainy and cold period with temperatures 5-10 ℃ above zero (in the 40s ℉).

Come in November if you want to watch or run in the Istanbul Marathon, the only transcontinental one of its kind in Asia. It crosses over the Bosphorus Bridge and ends up at the finish line by the Sultanahmet Mosque.

UNESCO World Heritage Sites Istanbul - Historic Areas of Istanbul

Istanbul, capital of the Eastern Roman and Ottoman Empires, has four historic areas listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. These areas are the Archaeological Park, the Suleymaniye quarter, the Zeyrek area of settlement and the Theodosian land walls together with the remains of the Blachernae Palace. These areas include attractions such as the Blue Mosque, the Topkapi Palace and the hippodrome of Constantine.

Istanbul Opera House

Süreyya Opera House

The Süreyya Opera House might just be the oldest building that has spent the least amount of time being an opera house. From its founding in 1927, it spent just three years being a theater and then from 1930 to 2005 it served mainly as a cinema and partly as a theater stage. It was first in 2007 that the building was remodelled and renovated into being a state of the art opera house. Thereby, Süreyya Pasha's dream after 80 years came true and the people of Istanbul can experience the magic of the opera.

Istanbul Marathon

Starting in the Uskudar district, the first thing you will see as you start the Istanbul Marathon is the bridge that connects Uskudar with the rest of Istanbul. The rest of the course follows the Mediterranean coast showing off the great culture and architecture of Istanbul. The Istanbul Marathon has been a great tradition since 1979, and is annually held in the month of October. Make sure to not miss it if you are looking for a sporty way to enjoy the city!
