UNESCO World Heritage Sites Bali - Cultural Landscape of Bali Province: the Subak System as a Manifestation of the Tri Hita Karana Philosophy

Thanks to its volcanic landscape and a wet tropical weather, Bali’s fertile soil is ideal for crop cultivation. Its cultural landscape consists of five rice terraces and their water temples, which are the focus of the subak system, the cooperative social system controlling the water. The subak system is an example of the Balinese philosophical principle of Tri Hita Karana, based on the combination of the spirit world, the human world and nature. The five landscapes of Bali are exceptional testimony of this system, which is why they are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
