Make sure to walk through the downtown shopping mall and treat yourself to a gift or two while browsing the local handicrafts.
If you want to explore outside the city, you can take a train to Bangalore and see another metropolitan area while you’re in the country. The railway station is fairly easy to navigate and you can travel throughout the neighboring cities on a low budget.
Don’t forget to spend some time on the Chennai beaches and get a meal at one of the beachside restaurants that serve some of the best food in the city.
There are also several museums in town where you can see beautiful artwork or learn more about the local history of Chennai.
Chennai has a tropical wet and dry climate, with most of the rainy season taking place from October to December. The coolest part of the year is January, with minimum temperatures around 15–22 °C (59–72 °F), so bring along an extra jacket if you visit during this month.
The city has several festivals throughout the year, including an excellent music festival in December and a temple festival in March that both attract crowds and bright colors.
