Rennes, France, is the capital of Brittany and a town worth visiting. It has an exciting nightlife, museums full of interesting cultural material and shopping malls that is just waiting to be explored.

Cultural lovers on holiday won’t want to miss the Museum of Fine Arts of Rennes. It holds hundreds of exhibits ranging from antiquities from ancient Egypt to items from modern times such as paintings and drawings. There are also other interesting museums in Rennes like the Museum of Brittany featuring science items and a planetarium, as well as the Museum of Farming and the Museum of Broadcasting.


Parliament of Brittany

Cultural lovers will also enjoy the Parliament of Brittany building, as it is a favorite tourist attraction with its displays of 17th century French art.


Botanical gardens

If you love to wander around beautiful plants, go to the Parc du Thabor with its botanical gardens. There’s also another botanical garden at the University of Rennes.



One of the best things to do in Rennes on a Saturday is to visit the Saturday market. It has more than 300 stalls full of different kinds of products and strolling around the different stalls makes for a fantastic Saturday activity. Or head to the Place de l’Hôtel de Ville to start your shopping adventure and continue on to other streets to find boutiques and other shops.


When to go to Rennes

Rennes features an Oceanic climate, which means it has winter and falls that are rainy and windy and spring and summers that are sunny and mild.



Head there in July for the Festival des Tombees de la Nuit, which celebrates music, theatre, film, mime and poetry. Food lovers should come in September for the Festival Gourmand, in which local chefs and restaurants demonstrate their talents in a special competition. Or come in June to celebrate the ArtRock festival or in July for the Tombees de la Nuit, which features concerts, plays, storytelling and other entertainment.

Rennes Opera House

Opéra de Rennes

Inaugurated in 1836, Opéra de Rennes has since been the main place for opera and performance arts in Rennes. The building has a long history and is an important part of the city. So much so that it got classified as a historical monument in 1961. The opera performed ranges from local works to classical pieces from all over Europe, served in an auditorium with excellent acoustics. The opera house is located near Place du Parlement de Bretagne, which is a nice little park in the city center where you can enjoy a drink after the show.
