Fez – The Well Perserved Medieval Heritage

Fez, Morocco’s medieval capital, boasts an ancient walled city that is considered the best-preserved in the Arab world. Fez Medina

Fez actually has two medinas, the larger and more popular is the Fes el Bali. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring car-free, labyrinthine streets. This medina i Fez is the older part of the city and is home to about 100 000 of the inhabitants of Fez. You can explore through the busy street markets offering various goods and souvenirs. Also, the tanneries in the Fez medina are a must-visit if you wish to see ancient leather-making techniques that have been around since the Middle Ages.



Sights in Fez

There are various trails throughout the city that take you to gardens, palaces, fortifications, and walls. Mosques and other smaller religious buildings all abound in the city and you can visit one to learn more about the Muslim culture.


Fez Nightlife

Different hotel bars, local pubs, and drinking establishments all liven up the nightlife scene of Fez. Remember though that drinking in public is prohibited in Fez, remember to respect to the Muslim religion that dominates in the area. But there are still plenty of fun nightlife spots to party at in Fez.


When to go to Fez

The Mediterranean climate of the city is divided into a summer season from June through September, a winter season from December through March, and transitional periods in between. Summers are hot and dry, with average highs ranging from 29.3 to 34.5 °C (84.7 to 94.1 °F). Winters are cold and wet, featuring average lows ranging from 4.2 to 7 °C (39.6 to 44.6 °F).

The summer season is also the city’s peak travel season and the medina is very crowded with tourists at this time of the year. If you don’t mind the rain, you can visit during the winter season instead to experience a more comfortable weather and get great deals on the accommodation.

UNESCO World Heritage Sites Fez - Medina of Fez

Fez is considered Morocco’s cultural and spiritual centre and it is home to the oldest university in the world. Its main monuments like the madrasas, palaces, mosques and fondouks date from the 13th-14th centuries, when Fez reached its height. The Medina of Fez is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to being a great example of Moroccan urban culture. It’s a good idea to get a guide if you plan on visiting the Medina, because it sure is a labyrinth!
