Faro – capital of the Algarve region and home of the bone castle

Faro is the administrative center of Algarve, and an overlooked Portuguese resort town. The city is a popular tourist destination and attracts many visitors every year who comes to enjoy all the things to do in Faro and in the Algarve area.

Faro Beach Life

Faro beach is the only beach in the area that can be accessed by roads, as the rest require a ferry trip. Some of the beaches are now handicapped accessible and have ramps and footpaths right to the sand, as well as special toilets and other gear. Be sure to learn the flag system so you can know when swimming is allowed, as green is for swimming allowed, red and yellow mean it’s not allowed and blue and white means no lifeguards present.


ZooMarine Algarve

ZooMarine Algarve is a combo of a theme park and a marine life zoo that started in 1989. They have dolphin shows, as well as seals, whales and sea lions. You can also see birds like macaws, parrots and cockatoos and a show with birds of prey like hawks and eagles. At ZooMarine Algarve you can also enjoy rides like a roller coaster, water slides and the Big Wheel.


Shopping in Faro

If you like shopping, there are many ways to satiate your desires in Faro. You can go to the Forum Algarve Mall, or find lots of unique shops on the streets of Rua de Santo Antonio, Rua de Francisco Gomes or Galerias Santa Antonio.


Capela dos Ossos

Capela dos Ossos is behind the heavily gilded baroque church Igreja de Nossa Senhora. It is built with the bones and skulls of over 1000 monks to demonstrate the impermanence of life. A bit macabre, but in the warm summer, it is well worth a visit and offers a cool reprieve.


When to go to Faro

Faro features a subtropical-Mediterranean climate, which means the summer is hot and sunny and has a range of temperatures of 27 to 35 °C (81 to 95 °F) and in the winter the temperatures range from 8 to 17 °C (46 to 63 °F). The average temperature of the surface of the sea is 15 to 16 °C (59–61 °F) in January and gets up to between 22 to 25 °C (72–77 °F) in August.
If you like motorcycles, come in mid-July for the Faro International Motorcycle Rally, or in September for the city holiday.

Golf in Faro

There are many courses in the area surrounding Faro. One of the most eye-pleasing courses can be found at San Lorenzo Golf Course & Le Meridien Dona Filipa. It is also a great course if you are looking to relax since it is not very difficult. Pinheiros Altos Campo de Golfe is another great club that features three 9 hole courses to make a total 27 holes for you to play on. It is situated on the Ria Formosa nature reserve just outside of town, making it a great place to go if you are looking for a nature experience. Other great courses include Quinta do Lago Laranjal, Quinta do Lago South and Quinta do Lago North.
