Things to do in San Salvador

San Salvador is the capital of the Republic of El Salvador. It lies in the Boqueron Volcano Valley and experiences frequent earthquakes.

The historic downtown of San Salvador used to be a popular destination among tourists but natural disasters have taken their toll on the old district.

The city is widely known for its lively nightlife and entertainment scene. The most visited nightlife district is the Zona Rosa, a tourist hub lined with cafes, restaurants, fast food chains, bars, clubs, and hotels. Other nightlife hotspots are Temptation Plaza, Boulevard de Los Heroes, Basilea Mall, and Las Terrazas.

Technically, there are no beaches in the city of San Salvador. However, they are easily accessible by taking a bus to Costa del Sol, La Libertad, Las Flores, or other beaches near the city. If you’re riding a plane when you go to El Salvador, you don’t have to travel to the city just to reach these beautiful beaches because the airport is located right at the beach.

When to go to San Salvador

The tropical wet and dry climate of San Salvador is characterized by a rainy season from May to September and a dry season from October to April. April and May are considered the hottest months while December and January are the coolest. During the rainy season, thunderstorms are expected to occur almost every day.

The peak holiday seasons in San Salvador are the Holy Week, the Christmas season, and the August Festival week. Surfers flock the beaches during the rainy season because the waves are bigger and more challenging.

UNESCO World Heritage Sites San Salvador - Joya de Cerén Archaeological Site

Joya de Cerén in El Salvador was a farming community that, around the year 600 AD, suffered a similar fate to that of the city of Pompeii and was buried under ash coming from the Laguna Caldera volcano. What makes Joya de Cerén fascinating is precisely a consequence of the eruption of the volcano; the site has been extraordinarily well-preserved thanks to the layers of ash covering it, making it the greatest example of pre-Hispanic village in Mesoamerica. For this reason, the site has made it onto the World Heritage List by UNESCO.
