UNESCO World Heritage Sites Alexandria - Abu Mena

Menas of Alexandria was an officer in the army of Roman emperor Diocletian. After the victory of his army, Menas declared his Christianity and refused to kill any Christian, a decision that lead to him being martyred. The martyr’s tomb, located south of Alexandria, turned into a Christian pilgrimage centre. The site became a holy city built over the tomb, with a church, monasteries, streets and houses and kept growing between the fifth and sixth centuries. Today, although there are few standing remains after its destruction by the Muslim conquest of the mid-7th century, the site is considered World Heritage by UNESCO.
