Are you looking for a different kind of marathon? The Danish town of Hvide Sande might have what you are looking for. Taking place on the beautiful beach in Hvide Sande, this marathon might be one of the most challenging since it is run on sand. Apart from the full length marathon race there are also a half-marathon, an 8k and a 4k for the more casual runners. Either way it is a great tradition to take part in when it is happening in June every year, and the best part is that when you are done, you can cool off in the clear blue ocean.
