Havana is the capital city, province, major port, and leading commercial centre of Cuba. It was founded in 1515 by the Spanish. In more recent times, Havana is well known for its splendid cigars, nightlife, and vintage American cars.

Museo de la Revolución

History buffs can visit the Museo de la Revolución, or Revolution Museum. The museum is housed in what used to be the presidential palace of many past Cuban presidents. The architecture of the building is a sight to see, but inside are many exhibits on Cuban history dedicated to the revolutionary war of the 1950s, as well as its War of Independence waged against Spain.


Plaza Vieja

The Plaza Vieja is another historic site and was the site of bullfights, parties and executions.


When to go to Havana

Havana is located very close to the Tropic of Cancer which gives it a subtropical climate. Average temperatures range from 22 °C (72 °F) in January to 28 °C (82 °F) in August. Hurricanes occasionally strike the island of Cuba, but they ordinarily hit the south coast and damage in Havana has been less than elsewhere in the country. If you are fond of swimming and participating in water activities take a trip to Havana in summer, when the waters surrounding the area are above 20 degrees Celsius (70°F).

UNESCO World Heritage Sites Havana - Old Havana and its Fortification System

Defined by the former city walls of the Havana you will find Old Havana, a site protected by UNESCO and considered World Heritage. Inside, the city is organized in plazas surrounded by important buildings such as the Iglesia Catedral de la Habana or the Palacio de los Capitanes Generales, while streets are mostly narrow with the traditional pastel-coloured houses that make going for a walk seem a colourful dream. Many of the greatest buildings have become museums and visitors have access to lots of churches, palaces, markets and monuments, making it easy for you to discover Old Havana’s history and culture.

Museo del Chocolate, Havana

If you are visiting Havana and happen to be a chocolate lover Museo del Chocolate is a must for you! You can actually smell the flavors already in the streets outside... The museum part displays the history of the cacao, production and commercialization and has a lot of items originating from Belgium and Holland, such as posters and packaging bags. The tasting-room café has marble tables and offers a great selection of different chocolate products, including chocolate "milk", which is not at all the same in Europe (liquid milk chocolate) - seeing this is made from real cacao and ordinary milk is a luxury in Cuba. Havana Opera House

Gran Teatro de La Habana

Gran Teatro de La Habana is located on Paseo del Prado on the corner of the Explanada del Capitolio park where the iconic National Capitol Building can be seen. The Gran Teatro de La Habana was founded in 1838 but the first performance that took place here was actually in the year before dedicated to certain exclusive guests. Today all kinds of performance arts can be enjoyed here depending on the seasons, for example operas, zarzuelas, concerts, ballet and festivals. Apart from that you can also partake in practical courses in a couple of traditional dances. Havana Marathon

The Havana Marathon is an annual marathon event in November, held on the Island state of Cuba. The event features several different races, including a main marathon, a half-marathon, a 10k, a 5k and a race for disabled making it an event where everyone can join in, no matter if you are an elite runner or a happy enthusiast. The course will take you from the National Capitol Building along the coast and inside the inner city of Havana. Take this opportunity to experience Cuba with your running shoes on!
