Founded in 1738, San Jose is the capital of Costa Rica, as well as the largest city. Holiday goers will be happy to know that San José is considered to be one of the safest and least violent cities in this area.While visiting, make sure to enjoy all the nice things to do in San José like the wonderful museums, visiting the theatre or go for a nice walk in one of the many parks in the city, like the National Park or Peace Park.
One thing you won’t want to miss is the Jade Museum, which is dedicated to this precious gemstone. Some say these beautiful stones have mystical powers of immortality and invincibility. Another interesting place is the Museo del Jade, an archeological museum that features stone tables, ceremonial heads, sculptures and other items from 500 BC to 800 AD.
The Museo del Oro Precolumbia or Pre-Columbian Gold Museum is another interesting place to see. It has more than 1,600 gold artifacts such as coins, figurines, amulets, statues, animals, and earrings.
When you get hungry, try some gallo pinto, which is fried rice and black beans, a staple in San Jose. Other common foods seen are cabbage and tomato salad, tortillas, and fried plantains.
Another place to visit is the National Theatre or the Melico Theatre, where you can see performances of dance, drama and concerts.
San José City features a tropical rainforest climate, but the elevation of the town makes it have a somewhat milder than expected climate. Temperatures there range from a low of 17 °C (63 °F) and 30 °C and (86 °F). It has a rainy season from May to the middle of November, but also has more than 2,000 hours of sunshine a year.
All in all, San Jose is a beautiful place to visit at any time of the year to witness culture, and learn all about its history.
