Another excellent place to visit is the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, which publishes major scientific journals, encyclopedias, and other academic works in Bulgaria.


National Assembly of Bulgaria

An example of spectacular architecture in Sofia is the National Assembly of Bulgaria, the main parliamentary building. It is located in the same area as the Academy and other famous monuments can be found.


Sofia Zoo

The Sofia Zoo is located on the grounds of the former royal palace and contains over 1,000 animals. You may want to spend more than one day in this place because of the sheer amount of wildlife and structural beauty within the zoo.

Sofia has cold, snowy winters and warm, sunny summers. Summertime experiences an occasional heat wave, so double check the weather before you visit.

Sofia Opera House

National Opera and Ballet of Bulgaria

The National Opera and Ballet of Bulgaria is both an opera house and an opera company located in the capital of Bulgaria. Nearby you will find the City Garden containing Temple Sveti Nikolay and Cathedral Sain Alexandar Nevski. UNESCO World Heritage Sites Sofia - Boyana Church

The Boyana Church may look rather small from the outside, but don’t be mistaken, it is considered one of the most complete and well preserved sites of medieval art in Eastern Europe, making it part of UNESCO’s World Heritage List. During peek times the church is quite crowded, and the entry ticket costs 10 lev. If you manage to get in though, you will find yourself surrounded by frescoes on every inch of the walls and ceiling with layers of paint dating as back as to the 11th century.

Sofia Marathon

Take your chance to run Sofia Marathon and experience one of Europe’s oldest towns. The course takes you through the central parts of the city and the full marathon consists of five laps around it. Both start and finish is in front of the National Stadium “Vasil Levski” and apart from the full marathon there is also a half-marathon, a 8.4K run and a 3K fun run available for you.

Sofia ski vacation - Good opportunities for slalom and cross- country skiing

If you want to go skiing while in Sofia you have Vitosha Mountain, located only about 6 miles (10 km) away. The main ski area is situated under the highest peak, which is at 7 513 ft (2 290 m). Here you find good opportunities to go slalom and cross- country skiing amongst the many slopes with powder. And if you’re interested they also offer tours throughout the mountain on foot. The snow starts to fall in December and stays until late spring.
