The history of Plovdiv spans 8,000 years, making the city one of the most ancient cities in Europe and the whole world. The city’s rich historic heritage is portrayed within the walls of its historic center. Even the new city center is filled with traces of Plovdiv’s colorful history but is mostly dotted with modern attractions and holiday destinations.

Old Town of Plovdiv

The Old Town of Plovdiv is easily walkable and strolling along the cobblestone streets can be a delightful experience. Some of the most notable attractions in the Old Town are the mosque built during the Ottoman Empire, the centuries-old church of St. Marina, and the Roman Amphitheater.


Plovdiv Opera and Philharmonic Orchestra

Two of the main pillars of Plovdiv’s wonderful culture are the Plovdiv Opera and the Plovdiv Philharmonic Orchestra, both founded in the mid-1900s. Performances are usually held in the open-air Roman Amphitheater and other cultural venues throughout the city.



Nightlife venues and shopping districts abound in the city. You can explore the Central Mall Markovo and the Galeria Mall, plus a range of smaller shops, clubs, restaurants, and stores in the Old Town and the city center.


When to go to Plovdiv

The humid subtropical climate of Plovdiv has considerable continental influences and is divided into four distinct seasons, with great temperature fluctuations between seasons. The hot, dry summer season runs from mid May to late September and features a maximum average temperature of 31 °C (88 °F) in July and August. The cold, snowy winter season covers mid November to late February and experiences an average January low of -3 °C (26.6 °F).

The city hosts the International Fair Plovdiv twice per year. During the fair there’s tons of things to do in Plovdiv and trade fairs, exhibitions, concerts, sporting events and conferences can be found all around the city.

Plovdiv Opera House

State Opera

The Plovdiv Opera House was founded in 1953 and became the State Opera in 2010. Located nearby is the Tsar Simeon Garden, a park with the famous 'Singing Fountains' honoring the opera tradition in the city. The present opera company perform both Bulgarian works as well as classical pieces and they sometimes do performances on the nearby hill where an antique amphitheater from roman times is located. These magical performances are something we really recommend you to try and time with your visit as they are certain to send chills down your spine.
