Belmopan is the capital city of Belize. It became the new capital when Hurricane Hattie destroyed nearly all the houses and businesses in the former capital of Belize City in 1961. The country desired a safer city that was in a better area where cyclones were less likely and that would allow for industry to be developed.
When visiting this fantastic city, be sure to go to the Market held on Tuesdays and Fridays. This makes for a really cool and authentic experience and it’s one of the most enjoyable things to do in Belmopan while on holiday. There is lots to see and buy, including farm products like fresh produce, as well as fish from local fishermen. Browse beautiful furniture and clothing from local artisans and many other products at the open air market while taking in the colorful atmosphere.
Animal lovers should go to the Belize Zoo, built in 1983, which is located on 29 acres and has more than 150 different animals which represent 45 native Belize species. It gets more than 54,000 visitors a year, many of which are from the local schools.
If you want to have a super outdoor adventure, go to the Belize Cave Branch River, which runs through a series of caves and is in the heart of the jungle. Tours can be arranged through several of the local tour agencies.
Belmopan has a tropical monsoon type of climate. This means there is a rainy season from May to February and a dry season the rest of the year. March or April are popular times to visit. The average temperatures in those months is a low of 22 to a high of 31, also a good average of the rest of the year. Throughout the year there are annual events of interest, and visiting the Belmopan Choral Society, the Festival of Arts for school children, or the country’s National Day activities are just a small collection of all the fun things to do in Belmopan during the year.
