Museums and Mozart

One of the most popular things to do in Salzburg is to visit its many museums. You’ll find plenty of museums that will surely catch your attention. A back-to-back treat for Mozart fans are the Mozarts Geburtshaus (Mozart’s birth house) and the Mozarts Wohnhaus (Mozart Residence). In these houses-turned-museums, you can find a collection of letters, memorabilia, and portraits of Mozart and his family.


The Salzburg Zoo

The Salzburg Zoo is open all year round, even on holidays, so you can practically visit it any time you like. It features more than 1,000 animals representing around 140 species, so be ready to to spend the whole day if you want to see all the animals.


Hohensalzburg Castle

The Hohensalzburg Castle is a structure that you can’t miss because it sits atop a hill. You can hike the Festungsberg or ride a funicular to reach it.


Salzburg Old Town

Of course, you shouldn’t forget to explore the rest of the Old Town, the great historic center of Salzburg that is declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.


When to go to Salzburg

The city of Salzburg sits in the temperate continental zone and features warm summers and cold, rainy winters. In summer, the city experiences a daily average temperature ranging between 13.8 – 18.6 °C (56.8 – 65.6 °F). During the winter months, the daily average temperature range between -0.8 – 4.8 °C (30.6 – 40.6 °F).


The Salzburg Festival

Perhaps the oldest festival in the city is the Salzburg Festival, a cultural event that features theater performances, concerts, and operas. There are also a number of festivals held during the Easter period and the autumn season.

If you want to take part in the Salzburg Marathon, plan your holiday in early May and register beforehand. This sporting event consists of different categories, so make sure to check the event information before joining.

UNESCO World Heritage Sites Salzburg - Historic Centre of the City of Salzburg

If you haven’t heard about the city of Salzburg, you have definitely heard about its son Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The historic centre of the city is considered part of UNESCO’s World Heritage since 1997 and when you see it you will understand why. The sight of the Hohensalzburg Castle seems to have been taken out of a fairy tale, just like streets like the narrow shopping lane Getreidegasse or the many Baroque buildings around the city such as the uncountable churches.

Salzburg Opera House

Großes Festspielhaus

While the city of Salzburg has a long tradition with opera, being the hometown of the prolific composer Mozart, in those times the performances usually took place in churches and at the court of the Prince Archbishop instead of opera houses. There are several venues where you still can enjoy opera performances in Salzburg, the biggest being Großes Festspielhaus, which is not only the biggest in Salzburg but in all of Austria even bigger than the Wiener Staatsoper in Vienna. Apart from traditional opera performances, the Großes Festspielhaus is also one of the venues for The Salzburg Festival, which is a performance arts festival held since 1920 during late July and August in Salzburg.
