When to go to Anchorage

One of the most popular times to visit Anchorage is during the summer months of May to September because they have the best combination of warm weather and long days. In summer, you can experience an average of 19.5 hours of sunlight every day, with temperatures averaging at 13-26 °C (55-78 °F). In winter, you can experience only an average of 5 hours of sunlight each day and the temperatures usually fall below freezing. This is also a very popular time to visit the city because of its fantastic skiing opportunities.

 

Anchorage Folk Festival

In January, the city hosts the annual Anchorage Folk Festival. In February, you can witness the amazing Fur Rendezvous Festival in Anchorage.

Golf in Anchorage

There are a couple of really nice courses near Anchorage. Eagleglen Golf Course is the most centrally located 18 hole course and features amazing scenery near Chugach State Park. Anchorage Golf Course is another great 18 hole course where you will have the chance to see wild moose, foxes and waterfowl. The fairways are framed beautifully by trees, guarding the course from the wind. A bit further away, about 15 kilometers from the city you will find award winning Moose Run Golf Course, a 36 hole course that never ceases to amaze visiting golfers.

SKIING

Anchorage ski vacations - Experience wicked alpine skiing

If you’re looking for some wicked alpine skiing Alaska is the place to go! It offers crazy good snow conditions with its high mountaintops. Within 45 minutes of downtown Anchorage you can choose from three different places for alpine skiing. Beautiful views, excellent terrain and something for every degree of difficulty are things that apply to all resorts. Only 15 minutes away from Anchorage you find friendly slopes at Hilltorp Ski Area, perfect for those who only has begun to ski or snowboard. The serious or amateur skier should head out to Arctic Valley ski area, located 10 miles (16 km) north of downtown. Here you can choose from 25 trails and a terrain park. At Alyeska Resort you can ski on over 1 400 acres and the resort has been acknowledged by Skiing Magazine as one of the top 25 ski destinations. It offers something for everyone, whether you’re a beginner or a pro.

MARATHON

Anchorage Mayor's Marathon & Half-Marathon

In the beautiful coastal city of Anchorage in the north-western parts of Alaska, you will find the annual Anchorage Mayor's Marathon & Half-Marathon in June. The Midnight Sun Marathon is the most popular event in the marathon and is apart from being a great course also recognized as a qualifying event for the Boston Marathon. Running through the beautiful rocky landscapes of Alaska might just be the perfect way to experience this great state. The run also features a relay run on the same course, where four people run the course, substituting after about seven miles each. If you are a group of friends traveling, you should definitely give this a go!
